Given that gold is denser than almost all other metals, whether something is made of gold is extremely hard to fake. Simple determination of weight and volume should be sufficent. A coin that is the right size but is not gold, or has too much base metal, will be "light"; alternately, a coin that weighs right will be somewhat larger. (Platinum is unknown in ancient times; platinum is denser than gold, but since it is about twice as expensive, making a fake coin out of platinum would make no sense. In theory, fake coins could be made of uranium, but this does not appear to be a practical problem.)

Gold coins have had a very long period as a primary form of money, only falling into disuse in the early 20th century. Most of the world stopped making gold coins as currency by 1933. However, gold-coloured coins (not made of real gold) have made a comeback in many currencies. When it comes to hand lenses, four or five powers of magnification seem to be the norm for many collectors. At these powers, an entire coin may be viewed all at once, which is especially useful when grading. Nevertheless, unless you are an experienced numismatist, you will not be able to see characteristics such as metal flow, die doubling, and counterfeit diagnostics on many coins when using minimal magnification. If the item is selling for a lot less than the spot price of gold, that is a big red flag. Why? Ebay is a relatively efficient market these days, especially as gold becomes more and more popular. If an authentic coin is selling at a steep discount to spot, you can buy it and sell it back to someone else for spot price and get an immediate profit (this is called arbitrage). In an efficient market, arbitrage should not happen. If you see a steep discount and it looks to good to be true, it probably is. Proceed with caution in that case.
